Alan Garner was the author of The Owl Service, one of the key texts within the recent fad for the English Wyrd. This early 1980’s documentary features Garner talking about his life and influences, and comes loaded with narrated excerpts from his books and eerie musical interludes and recorded screams that are curiously reminiscent of The League Of Gentlemen. Other scenes of Garner wandering around his key sites of inspiration – mainly around Alderley Edge in Cheshire – look like they’re from the early days of pop videos, with shaky hand-held footage and sudden zooms into blacked-out windows and strange rock formations. Somehow it all adds to the sincere intention of introducing Garner’s unusual body of work to the unsuspecting viewer.

Rural Farming Community, small girl wants to keep a small little creature.

Three men are reunited after 30 years by the echoes of a terrible crime. Old men now, and at the end of the line they are intrigued to meet a young girl named Sarah. Through her they are plunged back into the sordid (and hilarious) belly of Australia's underworld, both past and present.

THE EDGE OF THE WORLD gives a unique insight into the work of Tim Winton, one of Australia’s finest authors. By 1998, when this film was made, Winton had already won the Miles Franklin Award twice (for Shallows, 1984 and Cloudstreet, 1992) and been shortlisted for the Booker Prize for The Riders (1995). In THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, shot partly on the magnificent coast and hinterland of Australia’s north-west, Winton talks frankly about his work, his influences and what drives him.
